Work-in-progress for Medieval Map by Olivia Morris-Soper 11AJ

The students on the GCSE Art & Textiles courses are working on their preparation for their final examination, which will be at the end of this month. The girls produce work of a very high standard (as you can see above) and we are looking forward to seeing it in the end of year exhibition.

Look out for further posts with details of the exhibition dates, and more images of the girls work.

The girls hard at work drawing the mechanical Rhino

As part of their GCSE Art & Textiles studies, the girls in Year 10 travelled to London to do some research work at the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington. The extensive collection of art objects at the V&A gives the girls enormous scope and choice in what they can see and, most importantly, relate to their studies.

The girls thoroughly enjoyed their journey through some of the worlds most famous design icons. One of the most popular areas with the girls was the Theatre Room, full of famous costumes and sets from stage and screen including The Lion King and Equus.

“The V&A was an amazing experience that will never be forgotten, despite all the screaming girls that got told off by Mrs. Jones more than once!

Every section had something different for us to indulge ourselves into. The theatre had costumes to try on and two of the Lion King costumes that caught everyone’s artistic spotlight, and they even had a life-sized Rhino that someone wanted to take home…..Maddy!

Lunch was entertaining with all the pigeons joining us eating in the garden, collecting various crumbs around us whilst watching us with beady eyes that never left our food. The journey home was peaceful due to everyone starting to relax after a very busy day, and the view was mesmerising as the sun highlighted all of the trees and hills in its path.

The V&A was a magical and arty experience.”                 Emily Day – Year 10

The studies the girls produced will go towards creating their own imaginative and expressive pieces of work. Images of these will be displayed on a future post. Many thanks to Mrs Jones and Mrs French for their help on the trip, the girls thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Year 9 Animation Project

Models by Ellie Marsh & Emily Day

”This term in Art we have been making alien creatures out of plasticine. Our models will be filmed for ‘Aliens Got Talent’, a joint project we are doing in Art and ICT.

A group of my friends joined together, and created a band, Dolly and the Mixtures. We planned what the aliens would look like and what their role would be in the band.

This project was really fun, but did get a bit messy at times!”

Jennie French's alien dancing star!

My alien character is called Betty. She is a dancer with three feet pointing in different directions and a total of ten eyes.
She is made from compacted newspaper and wire mesh wrapped in gummed tape, and then all the parts are held together with plasticine.

'The Dolly Mixtures' by Abbie Watson, Emma Hill and Caroline Herszenhorn

“This term we have been making aliens out of plasticine to compete in ‘Aliens Got Talent’, a short animated film. My alien   is the green one with multi-coloured shoes on the middle of the photograph. It’s role in the band was as a backing singer.

Emma’s alien, the one on the right with the flower pot hat is a singer too, along with Caroline’s alien, the large pink one on the left.

The band are called Dolly and the Mixtures, and in the film they sing ‘Lollipop’ by The Chordettes. My friends and I created the aliens out of paper shapes, which we bound with gummed tape and covered with plasticine. We all really enjoyed this project and hope to do more like it in future.”
